SLOW FOOD UTAH: Terra Madre Katrina Relief Fund Thank You
- Slow Food Utah held a Mardi Gras fund-raiser February 28, 2006, to benefit the Terra Madre Katrina Relief Fund, which in turn benefited the Gulf Region Food Producers. Slow Food Utah received a heart-felt note of appreciation in response to the funds that were raised during this event. Slow Food Utah would like to thank all who participated, and share the following note of appreciation from Poppy Toker who is the Convivium Leader for New Orleans Slow Food.
- "Please accept my thank you for your fundraising efforts dedicated to the Slow Food Terra Madre Fund. The funds were moved quickly into the hands of the producers who put them to work immediately to help them get closer to producing again. We distributed $30,000 in grant monies on Tuesday, March 21st [2006] at the Crescent City Farmers Market. Because of this money, Kay and Ray Brandhurst have windows at their rebuilt seafood store and processing plant, Roko and Patsy Tverdeic have their oyster boat back in the water, the Brocato family are baking cookies again sharing temporary baking quarters with La Spiga Bakery – also Slow Food members and friends.
Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart. The greatest lesson of Katrina to me has been that the only folks you can count on are your food friends – they will come to your aid, quickly, thoughtfully and generously." Poppy Tooker, Convivium Leader for New Orleans Slow Food.
